Course Description: This course is designed to provide law enforcement officers with knowledge of the covert methods of communication used by gang members in correctional facilities and in other situations where covert communications are used. The emphasis is on deciphering and code-cracking of confiscated documents. Participants will learn how to look for patterns that help to decode documents and develop an appreciation for the ingenuity of criminals to hide their messages. Symbols, colors, hand signs, and tattoos will also be discussed.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Become aware of common methods that gangs use codes to communicate.
  • Learn specific gang identifiers.
  • Become familiar with real-life examples of deciphered gang documents.
  • Develop an awareness of common methods of clandestine communication.
