Course Description: This course is designed for the uniformed patrol officer or investigator who has had LIMITED experience with street gangs. The course will acquaint the officer with the history and organization of gangs, legal definitions, gang identifiers (including colors, symbols, hand signs, graffiti, etc.), criminal activities, documentation, and officer safety.

Course Goals: To develop an understanding of the origins and methods of operation of the most commonly encountered criminal street gangs throughout the country. To develop an understanding which will then facilitate the identification, investigation, and prosecution of criminal street gang members.

Course Length: 8 hours

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify and classify gang members and associates.
  • Describe the history of gang alliances and rivalries, and the criminal activity used by gangs to fund gang operations.
  • Identify investigative techniques which will lead to the successful documentation and prosecution of criminal street gang members.
  • Promote officer safety practices critical for street gang encounters.
