Course Description: This course will provide students with an understanding of the principles of basic surveillance techniques as they apply to the different types of surveillance performed by narcotic officers. During this presentation, the students will become acquainted with the various types and methods of surveillance, the purposes for conducting surveillance, the preparation of surveillance equipment, and the proper execution and documentation of surveillance operations. In the demonstration of basic surveillance techniques, the students will be shown how to apply the various principles discussed in class to actual surveillance situations, including a night time surveillance, via practical exercises and scenarios.

Course Length: 8 hours

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and importance of surveillance operations
  • State the various types and methods of surveillance
  • Identify the types and methods of surveillance appropriate for a given situation
  • Understand the principles of basic surveillance techniques performed by narcotic officers
  • Prepare various types of surveillance equipment properly
  • Recognize the common problems that can occur during surveillance operations and how to address them
  • Observe and properly document activities during a surveillance for potential use as evidence or probable cause for warrant issue
